guess the ball really is round...

i seriously wonder why i stayed up for a game that i knew united would lose or at most draw. not that i'm eating sour grapes after united's loss. but the signs were just too strong to ignore. here's the evidence:

of the things that only went as predicted in the premiership this weekend were: fulham being strong at home and spurs continuing their crappy and inconsistent away form. wigan getting whacked by everton as well as watford and sheffield united losing.

on the other hand, upsets and unusual happenings were rife throughout the premiership.

1) the first game of the weekend and the game that gave me the most joy. chelsea losing to liverpool for the first time in the jose-rafa era in the premiership with the hammer blow coming from the much maligned of late jermaine pennant with one cracker of a goal. unusual? read on.

2) charlton beat high flying portsmouth at fratton park. i am pretty damn sure charlton will get relegated this season, but they really pulled off an upset claming european football chasing pompey's scalp at their fortress home.

3) bolton getting their asses whopped by another relegation contender in the form of middlesbrough by five goals to one. bolton are usually tough nuts to crack, but being torn apart by dour boro just seems extremely out of character. also, boro skipper kevin nolan finally scored his first goal in a long long while after previously prolific seasons.

4) west ham scored twice away from home. relegation contenders with a true record away from home that screams of the drop, alan curbishley might feel hard done by newcastle's incredible luck with a very dubious goal being awarded. considering newcastle's luck with injuries, they were definitely very lucky.

5) man city lost at home to blackburn. sure, man city aren't exactly title contenders, but their home form this season has been excellent. little did they expect blackburn to pop up and put them to the sword in front of their fans with 3 goals.

6)even in the spurs game, an unlikely scorer showed up with pascal chimbonda nabbing the equaliser for spurs.

7) and lastly, the united game. rooney scored with his first header for man united. when van persie came on and swept in the equaliser, i wasn't surprised. when henry headed in (which is a rarity in itself like rooney's header), my eyebrows were raised, but hardly phased. disappointed at the shock and late capitulation but i guess rooney's goal was nothing more than false hope.

and as one of the silliest and most obvious sayings go, the ball is round. anything can happen.
