another swipe at politics...

politics has never really been cast in a favourable light for me. growing up on battletech novels that depict politicians as ruthless, cold, unforgiving and two-faced human beings who often for their own benefit, end up sacrificing the honourable and heroic warriors or inflicting sufferring upon their people. yes, there were politicians who were heroes as well, but more often than not, their past is so coloured with unsavoury incidents that it's hard to really like a politician, for you never know when they'll change or turn for the worst. often enough, the media is manipulated to sway the masses, playing up their nobility, showing the baby-kissing, the visits to old folks' homes and orphanages, whilst painting the darkest, most terrible pictures of their enemies, even if that might not be the case.

i guess fiction isn't really far from reality sometimes. reading the stuff reported by yahoo news on the elections never ceases to amuse, disgust, baffle or annoy me. i guess some people just can't handle the truth, and i don't think either side of the fence is a whole host of angels either. all this mud-flinging over one stupid issue gets tiring after a while, and hearing promise after promise after promise gets grating on the ears. "i'll make this place better than there-n-there in so many years." "so-and-so picked his nose in front of so many people. you can't expect him to lead the country, can you? vote me!" meh. things have been said over and over again over the years, that i think it's reached a point where people can see for themselves if things are going in the right direction. upgrading this, upgrading that... ugh. it's so tiresome sometimes. aren't there better things to be said? is it ever possible to go through campaigning without someone attempting to assassinate anyone's character in an election for once?

oh, and the sdp tactics still continue to baffle and amuse me. banned from speaking from rallys, comedian of the month chee soon juan gets his sister to read an email written by him out to the rally. ok, i give him credit for playing by the rules for once. but it's really sad (and comforting to know i'm not such a loser) to see someone resort to such silly tactics to have himself heard. i agree that everyone deserves to be listened to, but i draw the line when it becomes as ridiculous and as pathetic an attempt as this. it's all so bloody wayang sometimes, it just sickens me.

i can't wait for all these politicians to just shut up and get on with getting this country working again. less talk, more action please.
